We believe change will occur in the new generation – because of this, we chose to rework the image of George Washington crossing the Delaware. A child is seen on the boat in a very strong, confident stance. Around them, there is a tumultuous “wave of change” to reflect the chaotic climate our generation of peoples are going through unilaterally. Although the waves are reaching for them and have a rocky feel, they are on the boat, unphased and peering forward – straight ahead into the future with determination. They are carrying a palette and flag with tiny, cartoony cardinals around them. These elements will express the unabashed creativity and freedom to create a future we can all equally exist within – this opportunity should be available to everyone. Sometimes we find certain barriers exist that limit this way of thinking.
I think our mural is doing exactly what it was meant to do. It’s kind of weird to make yourself a voice for change. That’s why I tried to make our youth the center focus and specifically because they often do not have a voice.
